Happy Thanksgiving

November 27, 2008

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to “recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

President George Washington

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

(P.S. Don’t forget about our speical Thanksgiving Understanding Our Times internet radio broadcast this Saturday.  Call in and let everyone know what you are thankful for.)

A Needed Detour for Western Churches

November 25, 2008

By Rev. Michael Carl
Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Concern over this nation’s drift into economic chaos has been a frequent discussion topic in the blogosphere.  I admit to spending a great deal of time over the past two to three weeks emailing everyone I know about the crisis over gasoline prices and illegal immigration.  Yet, even though I know we are all quite rightly concerned over these and other issues, they are tragically only symptoms of a deeper problem.

They are symptoms of a nation that has lost its way; those issues and social ills are symptoms of a nation that has been at war with itself and at war against its Christian heritage.  They are also symptoms of a deeper problem that lies embedded in the country’s churches.

The state of the Christian Church in the United States seems to be hanging in the balance.  The Boston Globe had a story on Sunday, 15 June about declining churches in Massachusetts.

If the truth be told, only a few churches are growing; the rest are either barely holding on or slowly fading away.  As study after study has proven, the growing churches are growing through changing demographic trends, which is only an academic sounding way of saying the mega churches are sheep rustling.  Few of these mega-churches are growing because they’re winning the lost.
The reality of the situation has prompted a lot of hand-wringing and analysis from a number of the West’s best Christian scholars.  Theologians and writers Alister McGrath, Marva Dawn and David Wells have spent time evaluating the “Church” in the United States.  I know I’ve shared this quote before, but in his book, Spirituality in an Age of Change, Alister McGrath quotes a critic of the American church who remarked, “American evangelicalism may be three thousand miles wide, but it’s only six inches deep.”

In other words, the Church in the West is shallow.

Marva Dawn writes in her book, A Royal Waste of Time that many church services in America are without point, focus or purpose.  Dawn believes passionately that the average evangelical church in America offers up pabulum, serving no Biblical meat whatsoever.  In fact, she writes on pages 88 through 94 of her book, A Royal Waste of Time that worship in many of today’s churches reflects neither the glory of the Lord nor the majesty of Christ’s sacrifice for us.  It’s more like a glitzy ad to attract shoppers.

Her observation reflects the point made by the critic in McGrath’s book:  America’s churches have little depth.  In his book, God in the Wasteland, Wells points out that many American preachers have sacrificed truth in their preaching for platitudes and warm-fuzzies.

Maybe the reason for this decline in America’s churches is a lack of solid teaching on the nature of Christ, His Church and the need for substantial worship.  The lack of Biblical truth in our churches is reflected in George Barna’s 2007 surveys.  Barna reports that almost half of American Born Again Christians don’t belief in the devil.  Thirty-seven percent believe a person can be “good enough” to get to heaven and over one quarter of the same respondents believe that Jesus sinned while living on the earth.

In a recent sermon series, John MacArthur rightly declares that many of America’s so-called evangelical churches are now preaching the Gospel of Personal Fulfillment.  In this series, MacArthur went on to say that there is deep reason to believe that many sitting in our pews may not even be saved if they haven’t gone to the cross and forsaken their worldly ways and repented of their sins.[1]

On the average we’ve become a nation in which our churches are little better than social clubs filled with people who believe the point of the Gospel is to make us feel better about ourselves and to make us prosperous.  My friends, I fear that this idea is getting ready to be challenged at its very core.

Leonard Ravenhill said well when he said, “The key to revival starts in the pulpit (Joel 1:13), then the pew (2 Chronicles 7:14).”  Then he says again, “We’ll have no broken-hearted pews until we have broken hearted pulpits.”[2]

He’s tragically correct.  There will be no revival in this land until those of us (and I am one of them) in the pulpits truly begin to weep over the tragic state of our sin-stained, lethargic, worldly-wise, churches.

The Scripture for today is 1 Peter 4.17-18…

17 For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, what will be the end for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinners?”

We can’t neglect the importance of this passage.  The Lord is telling us that He wants to send revival, but that His people need to get their act together first.  Judgement will begin first in the Church.  God’s people need to be held to account and to a higher standard.

The Lord says, “’I want a pure and holy bride.  I want a Church that reflects My beauty and My grace.  I want a Church that loves Me first.  I want a Church that has its priorities in order.  This means, My people, that you have to die to self and let Me be the true Lord and Love of your lives.’”

It comes down to this:  We need to bow down before the Lord in earnest repentance and ask Him to break our hearts.  We have to fall down on our knees and weep.  As mentioned earlier in this article, the pastors and priests must lead the way.

We need to repent of the shallowness of our spiritual lives, our being so easily distracted by just about anything.  We need to repent of those hidden sins that are known only to ourselves and the Lord!

Then we need to repent of the fact that when we really get down to it, we don’t care about how many lost people there are!  Our lives are wrapped up in our own lives!

This must change.  This must change because this lack of focus is hindering revival.

So, there is only one way for revival to come.  We have to allow the Lord to bring us to our knees in true repentance—to repent of the shallowness of our worship, to repent of the shallowness of our commitment and to let the Lord have His way with us.

This means that we have to let His priorities be our priorities.  This means we have to let the Lord have His way even if it makes us uncomfortable.  We have to let the Lord have His way even it means we have to do something we don’t like or don’t want to do.

This means we will have to be changed to the point that when the Lord looks for us, He will recognise us because He can see His pure and holy reflection in us.

This is the only way.

To My Readers: Thank You

November 25, 2008

Chuck Baldwin
November 25, 2008

America’s history is replete with expressions of thanksgiving. In our giant collection of THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS (which we are now shipping, if anyone wants to order them), we have included The First Thanksgiving Proclamation. On June 20, 1676, by unanimous vote, clerk Edward Rawson was authorized to proclaim June 29 as a day of corporate thanksgiving. The proclamation says, in part:

“The Council has thought meet to appoint and set apart the 29th day of this instant June, as a day of Solemn Thanksgiving and praise to God for such his Goodness and Favour … [T]he council doth commend it to the Respective Ministers, Elders and people of this Jurisdiction; Solemnly and seriously to keep the same Beseeching that being persuaded by the mercies of God we may all, even this whole people offer up our bodies and souls as a living and acceptable Service unto God by Jesus Christ.”

On October 3, 1789, our first (and greatest) President, George Washington, issued his National Day of Thanksgiving proclamation. He said (in part), “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor …. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions …. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue …”

With a spirit of thanksgiving, Benjamin Franklin wrote, “And forasmuch as ingratitude is one of the most odious of vices, let me not be unmindful gratefully to acknowledge the favours I receive from Heaven…. For all Thy innumerable benefits; for life and reason, and the use of speech; for health and joy, and every pleasant hour,–My good God, I thank Thee!”

As one searches through our history, he or she finds endless expressions of thanksgiving to God from the recorded statements of virtually every state congress and governor, as well as every President in American history.

At this Thanksgiving, I would like to not only publicly thank my God and Savior for His bountiful and abundant blessings, but I would also like to thank my readers for their faithfulness to read and repost, copy, and resend these columns all over America.

During the past four months, I traveled more than 30,000 miles; and visited more than 30 states, and scores of cities and towns. Everywhere I went, I was inundated with dozens and scores of people telling me how they read and distribute my columns. Frankly, I am amazed and taken aback by the numbers of people who read these columns.

To all of my readers: THANK YOU. Thank you for your love of liberty, your love of constitutional government, and your expressions of appreciation for my columns. This column has given me an extended family of patriots that is among the greatest on earth. I pray our Heavenly Father will give you a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Again, thank you!

P.S. We are still shipping FREEDOM DOCUMENTS. This is our giant compilation of 50 of the greatest documents of American history in one volume. We print only twice a year, and our current supply will not last much longer. These make wonderful Christmas gifts. Here is the original announcement regarding THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS:

Make Yours A Patriotic Christmas

November 20, 2008

Chuck Baldwin

A few years ago, I sadly discovered that it was next to impossible to find our nation’s great historic documents together in one volume, so we decided to fix that problem. It took us a full year to research and compile over 50 of our country’s greatest historical documents, but we did it!

Now you can have these great documents at your fingertips in one beautifully bound, easy to read format. This compilation includes the documents that gave birth to the greatest free nation on earth. Nowhere else that we know of can you find these documents, complete in one volume, under one title. We call this magnificent collection THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS.

Media personalities such as MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and judges such as the former Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, Roy S. Moore (“The Ten Commandments Judge”), own THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS. Even the state Supreme Court in Tennessee recently ordered several copies. Pastors, teachers, high school and college students, law and history students, and homeschoolers have found THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS immensely valuable to the study of American history and civics.

Included in this remarkable volume are documents such as The Mayflower Compact, The First Thanksgiving Proclamation, the complete text of Patrick Henry’s immortal “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death” speech, The Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms, The Northwest Ordinance of 1787, George Washington’s Farewell Address, and so on.

We have also included several letters written between John and Abigail Adams as well as letters written by General Robert E. Lee. Do you remember the poem about Paul Revere’s ride? Well, it, too, is included in this compilation. Also included is the letter written from within the Alamo by William Barret Travis to the people of Texas. Of course, the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights are also there.

This giant compilation includes more than 50 documents, over 170 full-sized pages complete with a spiral ring binding for easy copying, and a professionally designed color cover. This volume is must-reading for every American patriot! Many people are buying multiple copies as special patriotic Christmas gifts.

FOR THE PRICE OF A COUPLE OF PIZZAS, YOU CAN HAVE THE GREAT DOCUMENTS OF AMERICAN HISTORY DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR.

The price is $35 for a single copy, or $25 each if you purchase two or more, plus $5 each for shipping. Simply mail your check or Money Order to:

Chuck Baldwin Live
P.O. Box 37070
Pensacola, FL 32526

And there is more: we can now take credit cards. Obviously, this is the fastest way to obtain your copy of THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS. To order by credit card online, or to learn more about THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS, go to: http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/products.html

Order now and you will receive them before Christmas.

Former Constitution Party Presidential Candidate, Howard Phillips, said, “THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS is must-reading for every American. It is essential that this volume be placed in every home in the country. I read my copy daily. We require our home schooled children to study THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS.”

Do not look for this volume in stores; it can only be purchased here. A retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel thought he could find these documents by simply going to the Internet. After searching several days without success, he ordered two copies of THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS. He told my secretary, “Tell Chuck he’s right. You can’t find these anywhere else in one volume. I tried.”

Here are some other personal testimonials of people who have purchased THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS:

“As a combat Marine who lost a leg in the battlefield, I want to commend you for carrying on this way with THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS. Semper Fi.”

WB

“This is so exciting! They are here! And they are great, wonderful, and superfantastic!”

DG, San Jacinto, CA

“This is fantastic! [THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS] could save our country if we can get enough people to order it.”

WS, Mansfield, TX

“As a Civics and Economics teacher in the public schools, [THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS] is a great resource to help my students get the right idea about the founding of our nation. Thank you very much for offering this great volume.”

MK, Newport News, Virginia

“I love your FREEDOM DOCUMENTS!”

MT, Plymouth, Massachusetts

“[THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS] are great! This is by far the best collection I’ve seen. I am a disabled Vet and would like 5 more to send to my children. Thank you so much and GOD BLESS.”

GB

I believe you will be just as happy as these people to receive your copy of THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS.

Make this Christmas one that will strengthen and encourage true American patriotism. Order THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS. Our supply will only last a couple of weeks, so order quickly–and thanks for reading my commentaries.

Order FREEDOM DOCUMENTS here:

A Message for the American Church

November 20, 2008

By Rev. Michael Carl

Anyone who’s been following the news and who’s also been watching Christian television or regularly visiting Christian ministry web sites has likely heard that our experts say we’re entering a period of turmoil.

Bankruptcies and bailouts in the financial sector, a rescue passage for America’s “big three” auto-makers, bankruptcies in the insurance and retail sectors coupled with an increased threat of terrorism have prompted an unprecedented number of experts, preachers and prophets to forecast the coming downturn.

The politicians are forecasting at minimum a recession.  Some political leaders say a depression bigger and longer than the Great Depression is on the way.

Forecasters and economists even say the nation will see food riots.  Some political leaders upset at the turn of events forecast a second shooting war for America’s independence.

Preachers a ministers from evangelical and Catholic circles say that the United States and the rest of the West is entering a time of judgment—an upheaval the likes no one alive has ever seen.

Regardless of the forecasts, the United States may be entering a time of judgment.  If we are, it’s not because we’ve elected Barack Obama.  If we’re entering a time of judgment, it’s not because we elected George W. Bush for two terms, nor is it because we elected Clinton twice.

In fact, the coming judgment isn’t because of which party holds a majority of seats in Congress or occupies the White House.

We’re not entering a time of judgment because we don’t allocate enough money for child daycare.  We’re not falling under the Lord’s decrees because we don’t spend enough on agricultural subsidies or because of the war in Iraq.

If the nation is entering a time of judgment, it’s because we’ve slaughtered about 50-million of our babies since 1973.  If we’re entering a time of judgment, it’s because of the filth and the perversion that fills our nation’s airwaves, satellite transmissions and flows through our internet lines in cyberspace.

The Lord will send judgment because of profane-laden diatribes in our movies, music and literature.  The Lord will send judgment because we permit the exploitation of our poor through games of chance.  It’s because nationally we’ve failed to take a stand for righteousness.

If we’re entering a time of judgment, it’s because one hundred years ago our seminaries began to turn out graduates who no longer believed the Bible as the Word of God.

It’s because the seminaries began denying the bodily resurrection of Christ.  It’s because our pulpits grew cold and indifferent to the truth and began preaching a Gospel of accommodation.

Our pulpits have preached a Gospel of self-fulfillment and self-exploration.  Our pulpits began to preach a “me-first” Gospel and denied the way of the cross.

If we’re entering a time of judgment it’s because the church in America has grown lethargic, fat, happy and satisfied with the status quo.

If we’re entering a time of judgment, it’s because our pulpits and pews no longer have a heart to win the lost or to “go into all the world.”  If we’re entering a time of judgment, it’s because the church stopped being concerned about righteousness and began being concerned with what the world thinks of us.

It’s nothing short of denying the Words of Christ and living lie if the church ever believed, or still believes, that the church can make peace with the world.

The church’s marching order from Christ Himself is to “make disciples”, not to make watered down converts who know nothing of the power of the cross and Christ’s death-defying gift of self sacrifice.  The church wasn’t to be about the business of trying to find its place in the world, the church’s purpose was and is to transform the world through the Holy Spirit’s power and through the cleansing tide of the pure, spotless blood that flowed from Christ’s outstretched arms.

The church’s mission is to preach repentance, death to self and a resurrected life, not a life of ease and self-actualisation.

The answer to the warnings of coming destruction isn’t to join a commune or a political party.  The answer is for the true body of Christ—His holy remnant—to come out and live an in-your-face level of discipleship and holiness.  The answer is to be on our knees pleading before the throne of grace for the power to live a holy life before the world.

Two weeks ago, I had a dream in which I was to do a joint worship service with one of the former pastors of the church where I am pastor.  I was puzzled by this dream because the other pastor in the dream is dead.

When I arrived for the service, I walked to the platform and stood among the choir members for this service.

Yet, for the duration of the dream, the inclination in my heart was to walk away from the crowd and the service.  I felt led to leave the room in which the service was to be held.

I was following a sense of direction to come out from among them.

After puzzling on it and praying about it, the message was clear.  I was being called to come out from the dead.  I was being called to come away from the dead institutional church of American Protestantism.  I was called to come out of dead works and the watered down, weak church as usual.

I was called to come out and be separate from the compromised, weak, and ineffective American “social club” religiosity.

The message is also clear for the rest of America’s true, born again believers.  We’re called to come out and be separate from those who play church.  We’re called to live as the church triumphant, but also the church militant.  We’re called to live under the shadow of Christ’s cross and to truly learn what it means to drink from His cup.

We’re called to proclaim and live the Gospel before the world in an uncompromising way.  We’re called to no longer play games and to tolerate weak teaching that advocates a version of Christianity that calls for a watered down Gospel.

We’re called to call sin, sin.  We’re called to tell people that if they don’t repent of their evil deeds they will perish and go to a Christ-less eternity.  We’re called to warn people about hell and to powerfully and uncompromisingly tell them about the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We’re called to unapologetically teach Christ and Him crucified, dead, and risen.

We’re called to a life of death to self and a life of taking up our cross and following Him without apology.

This is the only answer for a nation that is on the brink of judgment.
