Folks,
Does anyone really believe that since Obama will be president that all of the major crises in the world will just magically disappear?
The thought that Obama is going to bring us a new era of peace and freedom strikes me as highly naive. While Clinton was president, Al Qaeda hit the World Trade Centre the first time. We had the Balkan War, a peace-keeping mission in Haiti, the Khobar Towers bombing, the U. S. Kenyan embassy bombing, and the U. S. S. Cole bombing. During this same time, Israel still had to battle Hamas, there were terrorist rumblings in Turkey, the Caucasus and in Afghanistan. The Pakistanis had a power struggle and most of Africa’s nations stayed at war with one another.
In his book, Bad News former CBS News London bureau chief Tom Fenton reports that journalists over in the Middle East did dozens of warning stories about the potential for a major terrorist attack for the eight years prior to 9/11. Those folks built networks of sources, met with and interviewed guerilla leaders and terrorist insiders and the network’s New York and Washington bureau chiefs ignored the stories. They were, in Fenton’s words, under the influence of the Clinton White House and didn’t want to make Clinton’s foreign policy look bad.
Keep in mind also that our new President has appointed several Clinton retreads and our new Vice President Joe Biden has said he believes that someone, either a nation or terrorist group, will test Obama during his first months in office.
So, where do we go to find information on a possible where and when? Go to web sites like BBC News, Counterterrorism Blog ( http://counterterrorismblog.org/ ), CI Centre Blog ( http://www.cicentre.com/ ), Stratfor (who charges for their service), the International Crisis Group and The Jamestown Foundation ( http://www.jamestown.org/ ), to search for clues on when and where. Believe it or not, the Debka File is another excellent source for this type of information.
